Male Breast Reduction Redlands
Conveniently located to serve Riverside, San Bernardino, and Redlands
If you are suffering from gynecomastia, a male breast reduction in Riverside can help you. This surgical procedure is best performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in order to achieve optimal results.
Gynecomastia is a condition of overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men that can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or the use of certain drugs.
What Is Male Breast Reduction?
Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair one’s self-confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition. To correct this condition, patient will undergo Gynecomastia surgery to reduce their breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola. In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced. Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mammaplasty.
Ideal candidates for male reduction surgery are patients who want to get rid of enlarged or drooping male breasts. The best candidates have already tried non-surgical solutions and have found them to be ineffective. It is important to be in good overall health and, ideally, a non-smoker to ensure a smooth recovery process.
Male Breast Reduction Pre-Op Process
During your consultation at Rau Plastic Surgery, you will be physically examined. Dr. Todd Rau will perform an assessment of your chest in order to create an individualized treatment approach for you.
You will be asked about your medical history, specifically existing conditions, past surgeries, and present medications. You will also be asked about lifestyle factors that may have contributed to the development of your gynecomastia. If male breast reduction surgery is right for you, you will be briefed about the steps of the procedure so you can make an informed decision.
The Male Breast Reduction Procedure
At the start of male breast reduction surgery, either general anesthesia or a combination of local anesthesia and sedation will be administered. This will allow for a comfortable and pain-free experience.
Dr. Rau will employ one technique or a combination of techniques for your male breast reduction procedure. Liposuction and/or tissue excision are commonly used during the surgery. Liposuction uses a thin tube inserted through the skin to remove excess fat from the breasts.
If glandular tissue and/or sagging skin has to be removed, tissue excision will be done. Excision is the removal of tissue using a scalpel.
The location and length of the incision depends on the extent of the surgery. Usually, it is made around the areola (the pigmented area around the nipple) or within the natural crease of the breast to make it less visible. After the desired amount of tissue has been removed, the incisions will be closed with stitches.

Recovery and Healing
You will require some downtime and recovery after your surgical procedure. Pain, bruising, and swelling may be experienced. To help with the discomfort, pain medication may be taken. A compression garment will be recommended for faster healing.
Depending on your body’s natural ability to heal, you may be able to return to normal activities after several days. Avoid strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects for several weeks.
